Fuelled4Life 2014 Update

Fuelled4Life Poster2

It’s been a busy start to the year and there are many new initiatives to share, including a new look for the Fuelled4life Buyers’ Guide.
The guides were distributed to more than 1700 early childhood education (ECE) services and 1335 schools in February.

A Fuelled4Life editorial features in the March issue of Swings in Roundabouts – the magazine is distributed to over 2,400 ECE services around the country. The article focuses on the successful use of Fuelled4Life by two ECE services, information about the programme and how ECE services can get involved. The article leads into June’s Early Childhood Conference, where we will have a stand.

Similar articles and advertising will appear in targeted media throughout the year and we will be promoting the programme in other channels as opportunities arise.

We’ve also launched a new Te Reo resource for Kōhanga Reo, “Toi te Kupu” (hold fast to our language). The Heart Foundation worked with Toi Tangata (formerly Te Hotu Manawa Māori) to develop the resources that are designed to foster Māori language and support healthy eating.
The new resource has three parts: A mini Papa Kupu (dictionary) using many food, nutrition, health, and cooking terms, a sticker based language activity that allows the children to create an image of themselves and then apply food and nutrition sentences and a memory stick containing the dictionary, the 2014 Fuelled4life Buyers’ Guide, nutrition and catering information, recipes and menu planners. The resource pack will be distributed to over 1000 Kohanga Reo and early childhood education services around the country.
Our fresh food for schools initiative, Fresh Made, continues to grow with three companies now offering Fuelled4life everyday and sometimes options on their menus.
Statistics:
53% of schools and 42% of ECE services are signed up to Fuelled4life
29 food companies have registered over 650 products with Fuelled4life for 2014
Over 10,000 Fuelled4life Buyers’ Guides are distributed every year

Managed by the Heart Foundation Fuelled4life is based on the Ministry of Health’s Food and Beverage Classification System (FBCS) and is a free practical tool giving schools a head start in providing healthier food.
It is designed to inspire schools to provide tasty, nutritious products and to encourage the food industry to produce and supply healthier foods and beverages that young people will want to consume. Foods and beverages are classified according to their nutrient profile and are categorised into two levels; everyday and sometimes.
For people involved in selecting foods and drinks for canteens, vending machines, fundraisers, school camps and ECE service menus and special events, Fuelled4life identifies the healthier options.
