Exciting new category for fuelled4life

Fresh made, an exciting new category for fuelled4life was launched last week.  Healthier food choices in New Zealand schools will now be even easier with these nutrient guidelines for non-packaged foods.

Many NZ schools use local food suppliers, such as cafes, bakeries and takeaways to provide meals for students. Online school lunch ordering systems are becoming more and more popular among students and parents. Online school lunch provider Ezlunch, who currently supplies 36 schools across Auckland and the Waikato has teamed up with the Heart Foundation to test the feasibility of including a Fresh Made category in fuelled4life.

Macaroni Cheese smallWe identified the need for a number of tools and systems to support the production and assessment of healthy freshly made foods.  Kai Hong Tan from the Food Industry Team worked closely with Ezlunch and their suppliers to develop and trial a quality control system and a compliance programme aimed at assisting food preparers to achieve product consistency and quality.  Nutritional advice and support were also provided on food reformulation.

Currently 66% to 75% of the participating food services menu items meet the everyday or sometimes criteria.

Sally Hughes manager of fuelled4life is hoping the newly launched Fresh Made category will become a powerful incentive to offer food suppliers in return for efforts to make food healthier and we will see more and more food services participating in fuelled4life.
